Whilst I do love traveling with friends and family there is something really special about heading off on your own to see the world. In doing this you can make all of your own decisions, go where you want to go, eat when you want to eat and each aspect of the trip will be all your own doing. A friend of mine had never left the country before and last year I encouraged him to do a spot of solo traveling. For Thomas Leeper Myrtle Beach, North Carolina is where he was born, raised and where he had lived ever since, and it was time to get out of the bubble and see the world. Thomas raised some concerns about traveling alone and I want to extend the tips that I gave him, to anyone out there looking to fly solo on their next trip.
Don’t Stay Alone
Traveling solo doesn’t mean that you stay on you own at all times, in fact I would say that the opposite is true and whilst the trip is your own to do whatever you want, this gives you a lot of opportunities to meet new people. You can do this easily by using the internet, looking for meetups or even on dating apps to find people to meet up with for a good time. Solo travel doesn’t mean being a hermit abroad.
Staying Safe
Solo male travelers are at less risk than a female solo traveler but there may be some situations which you want to avoid in certain countries. The first thing is to do your research on the destination that you are heading to, and understand any scams or delinquency which takes place there, if any. Because of the fact that you are on your own you may be seen a s target by some but the best advice really is just to use common sense, don’t go wandering around at 3 in the morning, don’t wear all your expensive jewelry and gadgets when heading somewhere with a high crime rate and if an experience or a place just doesn’t feel right, get out of there.
Take The Time
When you are traveling alone, you should be using this opportunity as a chance to really reflect on your life back home. When you go away in a group or with friends you don’t really get this opportunity so when you are on your own you should really make the most of it. Use this time to think about your happiness, your mental wellbeing, the choices which you have made in life and your ambitions. There is something very sobering about going traveling and doing so alone will give you a great many moments to really pause and reflect on your own life, be sure to take advantage of it.
Solo travel is wonderful and you are going to have the most amazing time when you go.
