However, if you are planning to take a class in metalsmithing you could be lent a few tools by the professor. It would be a good idea if you purchased your own tools as you could practice the art when you’re not in class.
How Much to Spend on your New Tools
You don’t have to spend a lot of money on your new tools unless you really want to. However, you will need to make sure that you have all of the basic tools that you need. You will have to spend up to $200 but it’s likely that you will use all of the tools for quite some time.
A Jewelry Saw and Tool Box
Jewelry saw: If you buy a saw such as this you will be pleased to know that you can attach various sizes of blades. A jewelry saw can be used to cut silver metal, or plates of copper. You can also saw through wire.
Tool box: When you purchase a tool box you might want to purchase one that is slightly bigger than you currently need. Make sure you opt for one that has a lot of compartments as they’ll come in handy.
Bench pin: A bench pin is used for sawing and filing. This is added to the end of the bench or table that you’ll be using.
Bees wax: This can be used on the saw’s blade.
Files and Pliers
Hand file: a hand file, more specifically a large file are perfect for filing rough edges.
Pliers: Most people who take up Metalsmithing have round-nose pliers, chain nose pliers, and wire cutters.
Needle files: Also known as “Jewelers files” they file down some rough edges. However, they are also ideal for use on small areas. They’re also ideal if you need to have a lot of control over the jewelry that you’re filing. You can purchase a flat, square,half-round, and round needle files.
Solder and Flux
Solder: You will need medium, soft, and hard solder and it comes in a sheet or in a wire.
Flux: This is what is used to help the solder stick to the metal. It can also help to prevent oxidation.
Pickle and Pot: Your metal will need to be cleaned. Pickle is an acidic solution. A small crock pot is the ideal container that it can be stored in.
Brush: A small paint brush is ideal as it can help you to apply the flux.
Torch
You will need a torch tip that can be added to a propane tank. A pencil torch tip is ideal.
Metalsmithing Book
You will need to purchase a metalsmithing book, one that tells you all you need to know about metalsmithing. Chances are, you’ll use it for many years to come.
