Being an internet marketer is one of the most fulfilling and lucrative careers you can have, but the industry isn’t exactly easy to break into. Many people feel like you need to have a lot of expensive schooling or a whole bunch of connections in order to become a successful internet marketer, but this just isn’t true.
To prove my point, I sat down with Jurgen Cautreels and asked him how he found his way into internet marketing. Jurgen Cautreels is a self-made, successful internet marketer and influencer who has built his wealth through investing, NFTs, and, most importantly, marketing.
I also asked if he had any advice for new entrepreneurs looking to become internet marketers in the future. Here’s what Internet Marketing Expert Jurgen Cautreels had to say:
How much school is required to become a successful internet marketing professional?
In my opinion, no school is required as long as you do not mind doing a lot of self-learning. There are so many resources available online and through books that you can use to learn things.
If you’re not a fan of reading, first of all, you need to start, but second of all, there are also podcasts and Youtube channels out there dedicated to teaching this stuff. You may not learn all of the technical stuff at first, but they will come to you as you put what you learn into practice.
What skills do you need to become an internet marketer?
It may sound cheesy, but the first skill you need is confidence. Secondly, you should have your finger on the pulse of pop culture, and you should definitely know how to use the internet and social media in general. The more you know technology, the better.
After learning a bit, how can someone start their career? Should they just dive right in?
Yep, pretty much just dive right in. There are so many start-ups and entrepreneurs out there trying to build their brands and increase their internet presence.
Many of them would love to hire a new internet marketer for cheap. I’m not saying work for free or anything, but you will have to take a substantial pay cut at first to gain experience, especially without schooling. However, once you have a few clients under your belt, the world is yours.
Where can someone find a client? What if there are no clients out there that want to hire someone without experience?
The first client that you can always find is yourself. Start your own brand or business and market for yourself like you would someone else.
Even if you do not want the brand you create to be associated with you; you can create a false identity and market it. Think about something you like to do and are good at, or any community that you are a part of, and just start marketing yourself and putting what you’ve learned into practice. Build a following, build a brand, and then you can take that and show potential clients.
If someone gets hired, is there anything you recommend them to do in order to propel their career in the right direction?
It depends where they were hired. If they were hired by a marketing agency, then the first thing they should do is find a mentor. Believe it or not, people that have been in this industry a while love nothing more than to help a new marketer grow and spread their wings. I love it, and every veteran marketer I know loves it.
