Remix Goes Mainstream Panel at SxSW 2010

This March I will be speaking on a panel at SxSW entitled Remix Goes Mainstream: Making Mashups Pay. The South by Southwest media festival happens every year in Austin Texas and I’m excited to be a part of it this time around. The Making Mashups Pay panel is scheduled for Sunday, March 14 at 3:30pm – it should prove to be an interesting and lively conversation moderated by Patricia Aufderheide from the Center for Social Media. I will be focusing my comments on some of the more indirect benefits I get from my video remixing projects as opposed to any direct monetary gain like ad revenue which I do not get from of my work.

Speaking at the 1st World’s Fair Use Day

I have been invited to speak on a panel about my remix video work at the first annual World’s Fair Use Day (WFUD) in Washington DC on January 12, 2010. It’s an event put together by the public interest group Public Knowledge which works to defend all of our rights in the emerging digital culture. The WFUD is a free, all-day celebration of fair use: the legal right that allows innovators and creators to make particular uses of copyrighted materials. It will be focused on highlighting new and innovative uses of existing content; provide the perspectives of artists, policymakers, academics and business innovators; and teach you how fair use can enrich your creative work. The event is free and open to the public so check out the WFUD site for RSVP info.

Speaking at the Open Video Conference

I’m excited to be participating in the Open Video Conference at NYU later this month (June 19th and 20th). During the event I will be giving a short presentation detailing my creative and technical process in hacking pop culture. Basically it will be a quick tour highlighting some of the tricks and tools I use to transform mass media and create political remix videos.  I will also be moderating a panel called “Who Owns Popular Culture? Remix and Fair-Use in the Age of Corporate Mass Media” which promises to be a fascinating discussion.

A little more about the event: “Open Video is more than just open codecs. It’s the growing movement for transparency, interoperability, and further decentralization in online video. These qualities provide more fertile ground for independent producers, bottom-up innovation, and greater protection for free speech online. The conference will showcase awesome cultural works, inspiring talks, and cool tech demos from around the world.”

24/7 DIY Video Summit Site Relaunched

Last February I curated and presented a show of political remix videos as part of the 24/7 DIY Video Summit at USC. Now they have relaunched the 24/7 website with extensive documentation of the conference panels and presentations including mine. Below is the new summit overview video with interviews and comments from the curators, presenters and panelists.

The new site also has downloadable high-res versions of the main screening and selected genre programs, curator’s comments and interviews. Including the entire political remix video genre screening with my comments at the beginning.

Mashup/Remix Conference Promo Trailer

Just saw that I’m briefly featured in this trailer promo for the 2009 Mashup/Remix conference (March 12-13th) at Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Check out the new site for the event schedule, speakers and registration. I will be closing the event with a presentation on political remix video.

Presenting at the IP/Gender Symposium 2009

I’m excited and honored to be invited to give a presentation at the IP/Gender Symposium at American University Washington College of Law in DC. The conference will take place April 24th 2009 and the theme this year is “Female Fan Cultures and Intellectual Property” and the event is co-sponsored by the Center for Social Media and the Organization for Transformative Works – if you are not already familiar with OTW check out their site and journal online. My contribution to the symposium will be a talk and presentation of collected online remix videos with themes of gender and sexuality as well as remix videos on other political topics transformed by female identified creators. Update – my presentation will be on Thursday, April 23. 7:15pm.

I’m often of two minds when speaking about gender. On the one hand, as a man, I am conscious that I take up space otherwise filled by women. On the other hand though I feel it is incredibly important for men (especially white and/or straight identified men) to stand up and visibly advocate feminist, anti-racist and queer-positive positions. With that in mind I am privileged and especially thrilled to participate in this convention!
