Reverend Billy Attempts an Exorcism of Bank of America

April 14th, 2009

I happened upon this demonstration in Union Square NYC where the Reverend Billy attempted to exorcism bad loans and toxic assets form the Bank of America ATM. The performance was part of a national day of protest under the banner “Break Up the Banks” demanding nationalization, dismantling and decentralize the country’s largest banks.

Defaced Anti-Sexist Stickers

April 13th, 2009

I found this series of anti-sexist stickers (or what was left of them) in Seattle on Capitol Hill. All but a few of them were ripped off or defaced with the type of anti-feminist reactionary rhetoric popularized by the likes of Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Stern. It should be noted that these stickers are on a street literally covered in hundreds of handbills, posters, stickers and street art, none of which were actively attacked in this way.

I was partially inspired to share these images because of another similar post by Lisa on the blog Sociological Images where she points out that “Until inequality is challenged, things often seem to be just fine; when groups stand up and demand equality, we suddenly see how fiercely people will defend their privilege.”

The images below sadly illustrate the intense nationwide backlash against feminist and anti-sexist messages.

Feminist Street Art

April 13th, 2009

I was excited to find these feminist stickers and posters in Seattle while visiting family over the holidays. Hopefully they will inspire similar street activism in other places.

Save Gaza Protest in Toronto

January 10th, 2009

Images from today’s demonstration in downtown Toronto against the latest Israeli assault on the people of Gaza. So far over 850 Palestinians have been murdered by the brutal military attack including at least 200 children. For the most up-to-date information on the ground in Gaza checkout Al Jazeera English on the web or watch the television news channel live on your computer with the Live Station app.

Stand With Chuck Turner

November 30th, 2008

Below are a series of photographs I took of Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner over the past 4 years or so. During that time I have both worked with and been inspired by Chuck – in fact he is one of the only politicians I have ever trusted. Chuck has worked tirelessly for social justice, human and civil rights and has been a strong steadfast voice for people his community. Recently he was arrested by the FBI in a dubious set-up operation targeting progressive black political figures in Boston. In an effort to help him clear his name my brother and I have built a website for his supporters at supportchucktuner.com

A Public Fruit Jam

September 13th, 2008

While in Linz at Ars Electronica I met the amazing folks from the Fallen Fruit project based in Los Angeles. Their project at the festival included a “Public Fruit Jam” at which we were all invited to collectively make homemade jam. Exciting that Ars included them this year, especially considering they are anything but electronic. This was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Austria! Below are images documenting the production of our first delicious apricot-plum-elderberry concoction.
