About Jonathan McIntosh
Hi my name is Jonathan McIntosh. I’m a video remix artist, a photographer, a new media teacher, a consultant and an activist. I’ve also worked on numerous media and social justice related projects in the United States and around the world. In my spare time I help co-edit the blog Political Remix Video and I’m a member of the Open Video Alliance. I also do some freelance work building and customizing wordpress websites – mostly for non-profit organizations.
Political Remix Video
My video work remixes and transforms fragments of mass media pop culture to tell alternative political, social and cultural narratives. Basically I’m a pop culture hacker, but instead of computer code I hack television. My political remixes appear online and also in film festivals, on community tv stations and at new media conferences globally. Last year I was a consultant for the Remix America online project. And last summer I also co-taught a two week intensive workshop called the Fair-Use Remix Institute (FURI) with Chicago youth, using remix video as a media literacy tool.

Photography
My documentary photography work centers mainly on issues of social justice in politics, economics and culture. My images are almost all licensed with Creative Commons and have been published widely both in print and online, including places like: The Progressive, YES! Magazine, Left Turn, Z Magazine, and Next American City. Through Creative Commons some of my photography has also found its way into children’s textbooks, independent films, tv shows, student dissertations and onto the covers of academic texts. I also won the Best People Photograph Award in the 2005 Wikimania Media Competition.
