Buffy vs Edward (Twilight Remixed)

Description:
In this remixed narrative Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Sunnydale High. It’s an example of transformative storytelling serving as a pro-feminist visual critique of Edward’s character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy’s eyes, some of the more sexist gender roles and patriarchal Hollywood themes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed in hilarious ways. Ultimately this remix is about more than a decisive showdown between the slayer and the sparkly vampire. It also doubles as a metaphor for the ongoing battle between two opposing visions of gender roles in the 21ist century.

    Hey Jonathan,

This was truly brilliant, both in the way you created a narrative through intercutting and in the way it completely undermined Edward’s somewhat cheesy lines and the pseudo-melodrama of the film. However, I’m still not sure the vid doesn’t partially deconstruct itself given that Buffy’s attitude toward hot and creepy vamps isn’t as suave and disinterested as we see her act toward Edward here. I think you even used footage from Angel stalking her in S1, so the unspoken context for a Buffy fan at least is that Buffy may recognize Edward’s creepy behavior, but she certainly fell for Angel’s, right? Nevertheless, as a critique of Twilight and the supposed attractiveness of Edward’s stalkerish and weird behavior, this BuffynotBella response is great! Thanks for sharing!

Clever video remix! I used to watch Buffy, too, and now I’m a Twilight fan. Bella was NOT attracted to Edward BECAUSE of his “stalking.” Sometimes people have one look at someone and are helpless to their feelings, so the fight becomes one of self-control vs. surrender. Buffy and Angel experienced that fight, and Buffy was very aggressive in taking out any forces trying to overtake her control of the situation. Luckily for her, her assailants were not nearly so powerful or wooden-stake-resistant as Bella’s. I’m tired of the argument that Bella is weak and Edward is creepy. They’re madly in love and want to make it work without hurting each other, just like Buffy and Angel. I think the video speaks more to what happens when one side is assertively (aggressively?) in love and the other wants no part of it.

Great remix. I’m a Buffy and Bella fan. I think Buffy would have had a little more troube with the Edward from the books, but the movie did make him seem a little creepy. You did a great job putting the file together. Awesome work.

@Kristina @Jae – Some of the best discussions on the Angel/Edward similarities and differences are on smartbitchestrashybooks.com, pandagon.net and this post from pixiepalace.com. Though I’m sure there are many many more on live journal etc. I do think the two stalker story lines are treated very differently, and Buffy calls Angel out on his behavior even in the beginning of the series (as you see in the stalker clip I used). That said, I do think there a number of things about Buffy’s relationships that merit discussion and debate and I’m very happy to see that happening all over the internet!

I wouldn’t go so far as to say “brilliant” though I gotta admit I liked (and wanted) the ending.
The REAL point here(besides the obvious one in Buffy’s hand)is that Buffy (the TV show) has covered it all, so much so that anyone could take clips from it and splice in any “Vamp” wanna be and come up with a decent story (like Twilight for example?.)
I’ve never seen or read any of the “Twilight” stuff and because of Buffy I neither want to or need to.
I heard the PR from Twilight when it first came out, something along the lines of ” A teenage girl falls for Vampire, it’s NEVER been done before!” What a load of CRAP. Buffy did it ALL and Twilight comes along and picks and chooses what to rip-off.
Now the rumors have started about the NEW Buffy Movie which will be directed by the same losers who tried to fly that stuff with Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry past us. Have you heard the rumor? Supposedly they are bringing in Twilight people to make suggestions.
Twilight can rest in piece…Buffy (the TV Show)LIVES!

    Well done!

I love the overt “most girls don’t find stalking a turn-on” which is one of the most objectionable things about the Twilight series.

On the purely technical side (and I’m not a vidder so I don’t know how difficult this would be), it would help if you could use filters (?) to colormatch the scenes a bit better (especially in the beginning of the vid) so that it’s not as obvious the clips are from two different sources.

    [Reply]

    Jonathan on June 24th, 2009

It was actually a style choice to leave the color (mostly) the same as the originals (except for making the Twilight forest shots a little darker) I wanted the viewer to always be reminded that this is a visual critique of two different sources. Another vidder articulated this to me beautifully – That the different colors helps pull you back out of the narrative so you can think about the message of the juxtaposition as you watch. But yes I didn’t want to hide the fact that it was a remix (I mean not amount of filters can match Buffy’s many hair styles, but I like that they change for the same reasons) Its also helpful for those who haven’t seen one or either of the series or know that the blue shots are from Twilight and the orange ones from Buffy.

This is a thing of beauty, Jonathan. Thank you!

Kristina Busse, good point: but Buffy’s behaviour towards Angel was always more double-edged (and occasionally pointy) than Bella’s towards Edward. Also, Angel came in for a lot of criticism from the surrounding characters. His stalky romance with Buffy is definitely a problematic element to the show, but to my mind it doesn’t come close to the problematic elements in Twilight, where Edward’s behaviour isn’t critiqued at all.

This is so great, Jonathan! You obviously spent a lot of time searching for the perfect reaction shots, and I love the audio work, how you’re able to get Buffy to interrupt Edward’s blathering with her snarky comments. It’s delightful.

I can’t help but think how so much of the footage of her telling him to step off is from her relationship with Spike, and how BtVS went out of its way to show how twisted that relationship was — while still portraying it as sexy. BtVS isn’t immune from the problematic, but it’s miles ahead of Twilight.

  17. Little Albatross on June 21, 2009

Kristina: Sort of agreed, but Buffy doees plenty of things Bella doesn’t do, including calling Angel out on his stalkery behavior.

I’m not opposed to the idea of a vampire falling in love with a human, but it’s how it goes down in Twilight that grosses me out. I’ve got to believe that if Angel had opened with telling Buffy he wanted her blood worse than anything he’d ever experienced and included, “tell your parents where you’re going to be, because you might not come back alive”, Buffy would’ve been like, “uh… pardon?” instead of “*swoon!* How romantic!” in the case of Bella.

Buffy was not opposed to killing Angel when he becamse a major threat, and she never lost her identity to him. That, in my opinion, is what makes Twilight gross and inappropriate.

If you read the books, this is pretty much Edward in a nutshell as well, except just angst rather than wangst. However the consensus of my book club was that the movie Twilight really played up the stalkerish bits of the book (which were fewer and more far between)so we had a great laugh over the movie.

Excellent job putting this together I laughed my ass off!

I enjoyed this video. I strongly disliked how “romantic” Edward’s actions were portrayed in Twilight because it seemed almost abusive to me. Buffy’s line about stalking not being a really big turn on for girls hit it spot on.

On a technical level, I’d say this was very well done. For the most part, it seemed like they were really talking to each other. I liked how there were instances where the video was coming from Buffy and the audio from Twilight or vice versa. Made it seem more realistic, as if they were really in the same place. I particularly liked their conversation at the Bronze and the fight scene at the end was fantastic. You were very careful and the small part you got from Harry Potter were just right, I was wondering how you’d show the staking but Avada Kedavra’d Cedric Diggory was perfect for it.

Two things though, the colors in Buffy were warmer while the colors in Twilight were paler. It’s a noticable difference. Also there were some cases where their stances, the directions in which they were facing made it obvious they weren’t really talking to each other. But those are just minor quibbles, on the whole, good job!

This is so funny and brilliant. I am a long time Buffy fan. I also read the Twilight books and was increasingly disappointed with the male roles (of Edward and Jacob), Bella’s co-dependent attitude, as well as Stephenie Meyer’s defense of all of it as “romantic”. And then I see the fans all over the Internet continuing to *rationalize* this notion as acceptable. Its just flat out strange to me. Haven’t any of them read “The Gift of Fear”?

But anywho, thank you for demonstrating some much needed girl power via Buffy. I liked this clip more than the movie.

Thank you for this video! I agree with many of the above statements about Buffy’s problematic relationships with vampires. My first reaction to this remix (after laughing and cheering) was to think, oh, Buffy isn’t exactly Miss Superior when it comes to healthy relationships with bloodsuckers. But she, along with her friends and family, always acknowledged that there were problems and tried to work toward something better for herself. At the end of the series, she commits to developing herself completely as a person before settling down into any relationship (the “I’m cookie dough” speech).
@Jae, I agree that the idea of surrender and being “helpless to your feelings” can be part of a sexy and romantic drama. However, with Twilight, you can’t remove the love story from the context of a simple (creepy) predator/prey relationship where Bella has no real power. Buffy would never stand for that. Hence her snark.
Now to buy myself a “Buffy Staked Edward” shirt!

I tend to disagree with your assessment of Edwards characterization in the movie. From what I could see aside from the ridiculous hair they kept him pretty faithful to the source material. If your critique extends to the novels then my objection is that Edward’s characterization is the least of the issues in the series. I think her personality is a natural extension of core problems with the book. Sorta like blaming the car for going slowly when the speed is a natural extension of the transmission problem.

Anyway agree or disagree your video was excellent on varying degrees of both superficial and intellectual levels.

Not to get too nerdy on you, but I own every season of Buffy and have read all the Twilight books, both series addicting for different reasons as I’m sure you know. My friends and I were joking about how cool it would be to make a Buffy vs. Edward movie/short, and how of course Buffy would win in the end because she’s a badass (not to mention the thematically ‘girl power’ interpretation you chose to portray, that with which I complete respect and agree).

Spot on. I’m a longtime fan of the Buffy series and characters, and though I read Twilight, I had some major issues with the ’stalker’ dynamic and the simplistic characters.

However, it’s true that Buffy did end up in relationships with both of her ’stalkers’ (Angel and Spike). A more faithful interpretation of her character might have shown the initial disdain, the torrid love affair, and then the strength of character required to stake him for the greater good. Which is how I WANTED Bella to behave – grow a spine, girl! – but she refused…

    [Reply]

    Jonathan on June 24th, 2009

I thought about that, and true there is definitely room for critique of Buffy’s onscreen relationships for sure, but the btvs show was careful to have her learn from her experiences/mistakes most of the time. Remember that “I’m cookie-dough speech” near the end of season 7 where she decided she doesn’t need a guy around at that point in her life to make her happy becuase she is “not done baking”, contrast that with Belle who wants to end her life without Edward around etc. (If you are super geeky on Buffy you might notice I coincidentally added a couple shots from that same cookie-dough scene near the end).

BUT I’m a huge Buffy/Angel series fan. These two are the best series ever.

And I really loved this video. I used to be an Edward fan in the first book, but after the second one, where he leaves Bella… I just got so “angry”. At him, for being so stupid. She almost DIED last summer, and then, he left her for a little incident with Jasper (this is where I started to love Jacob, who is way much more realistic and interestic character than the stalker). But, after New Moon… Bella is way more… hateable. Gosh. She wanted to die for some vampireguywhatever. I do love the books, but I really think that Stephenie have wrong “girl” power “thoughts”. Seriously, she had put this idea of “dying for the perfect man” (a man that DOES NOT EXIST) that NO WOMAN should ever think. The bad thing about all this, is that there are millions of silly girls that believe that. It makes me feel so angry.

I admit that Buffy not always have been my favourite person, but that comes from jelousy only lol. Even when I never like her for Angel (I always wanted Angel to end up with Faith), she’s a badass and she rocks.

Now I want an “And Buffy staked Edward Cullen. The End” shirt!!!
But I’m from Argentina, not sure that I will be able to get it :(

I posted this video on my blog.

Your mashup is beautiful and hilarious, but a “pro-feminist visual critique?” Get over yourself.

So Twilight is evidence of “patriarchal Hollywood themes”? Where do you think Buffy was made, in a Nicaraguan FairTrade turnip collective? No, Buffy was made in Hollywood, by a man, Joss Whedon, for fanboy nerds like me. The “antifeminist” Twilight was written by a woman, Stephenie Meyer, to appeal to a female audience.

What does that tell you? Which fanbase likes strong, assertive, female protagonists more? The patriarchs or the matriarchs?

    [Reply]

    Jonathan on June 30th, 2009

@reynolds – Your response is puzzling at best and a classic example of reactionary anti-feminist backlash as worst. Have you read or listened to Joss Whedon talk about the intentional feminist underpinnings of Buffy? (Here is one speech on the topic.) To assume that Whedon wrote Buffy for your own personal fanboy enjoyment is ridiculousness and reveals your staggering level of male privilege. Yes btvs was technically made in Hollywood but the writers (many of whom were women btw) actively subverted the expected sexist tropes, a very rare thing for a television show. This too is common knowledge and there are literally volumes written on the topic, I wonder how you managed to miss it?

Twilight was indeed written by a women, but that fact is irrelevant here becuase the effect of the story is to re-enforce and even celebrate deep patriarchal stereotypes and social norms. And there are a great many women who have pointed this out in critical responses to Twilight, perhaps you are unaware of them as well? More to the point women can be agents of the sexist status-quo, just as it is possible for men to be agents of gender equality. Though too many men fall into the role of policing each other to stay on the path of male dominance, instead standing up for gender justice and feminist ideals.

Lastly, your assumption that women do not like strong female protagonists is so incredibly absurd I hardly know how to responded. Perhaps you have been living on a different planet, in which case you might not be aware that women make up the majority of the organized fan communities around btvs, especially the creative ones.

Now, kill off Bella, and I’m sure the world will reward you greatly.

    [Reply]

    Jonathan on June 30th, 2009

@Adelheid – Glad you enjoyed it! As for Bella, one of the reasons I cut her out of the remix was becuase I felt her character was already written to be so extremely disempowered. But one can easily imagine another alternative narrative, created by someone else, where she replaces Dawn (Buffy’s younger sister) and Buffy than takes on the role of guide and mentor – teaching Bella a thing or two about the art of slayage.

If Edward really was so creepy, then why is Twilight a major box office success? And why are the majority of Twilight fans girls? Wouldn’t you think that most girls wouldn’t want to watch a movie where the main love interest is a creepy, stalking guy?

I also find it interesting that guys have more of a tendency to not like this movie than girls. Being a guy myself, to be honest I had a hard time staying awake while watching this movie.

I think you have Capitalist Confusion. Just because something is a success does not make it good. It does not make it well written, socially redeeming, or anything other than a money maker.

This idea that a majority is always right and success = decency is disturbing in how much it has grown lately.

People have self esteem issues and want to be noticed, attractive, and loved by someone, even if its someone that isnt good for them. Younger girls especially. All Smeyer did was cash in on that insecurity by calling it a love story.

This was absolutely amazing. I’m a Buffy fan, and was never able to really “enjoy” the Twilight series due to the Scarlett O’ Hara Bella approach to everything. The mythology was lost on me, and it just seemed like a book for children. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t. And it just didn’t make any sense at all!

I’ve seen shirts about “And then Buffy staked Edward. The End.” They gave me a good chuckle. But after seeing your well put together mini-movie, I about cried laughing. Everything the video stands for, and all that it doesn’t are perfect. (And if you look up Buffy, Twilight, or even Buffy & Twilight on youtube…the video is some where on all of the pages GRATS!)

    Thanks again for this marvel!

The male fanservice equivalent of Bella/Edward is the anime trope of the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”, which can be just as dangerous. Cruelly subverted in the Welcome to the NHK novel (not the anime) where Misaki is shown to be just as messed up as the hikikomori protagonist.

There’s a fair bit of Manic Pixie Dream Girl in Japanese media. Maybe you should do a video on that?

I loved this video and having seen the Twilight movie in an attempt to make sense of why people like this franchise, I was bewildered. What kind of messages does this send to young women? Naturally, men can be just as sad fantasists as well. But I’ve mentioned that above.

Yes, dammit, yes. That is exactly how all women (well, all people) should treat stalkers. Don’t encourage them, and if they won’t give up, stake ‘em — at least metaphorically.

But I don’t actually agree with some of the things Buffy asserts in this, such as “being stalked isn’t a big turn on for girls,” and the bit about smelling. Because, hello, book sales!? Obviously LOTS of women fall for that kind of garbage, or at least fantasize about it. But that’s what makes stories like Buffy’s and your video here so valuable — they dismiss that mindset in a very clear way.

    Anyhow, Bravo!

It’s the whole Bella camly acepting Edwards beahvior thing. We all want the heroine to end up with the hero, but if she has to nod, smile and play nice no matter what to do it it’s just not worth it.

I used bit-torrent to download digital files of both Buffy and the Twilight movie. I happen to also own the Buffy DVD sets but the DMCA prohibits me from ripping the footage from encrypted DVD (even for fair-use remix like this one) so ironically its actually more legal to bit-torrent the show.
