Fair Use Remix Institute Workshop
This past July I facilitated a two week workshop in Chicago focusing on media literacy and political remix. The Fair Use Remix Institute (FURI) brought together urban youth, active in social justice work, from across the city. We worked to first deconstruct mass media images and than to creatively reconstruct new subversive messages from the pieces through the use of online media and web tools. Each participant chose a sociopolitical issue important in their own lives than found fragments of mainstream media and used them to build a remix video response. Working in this more collective way was a welcome change since remixing is often a very individual process. You can see some of the results from our workshop on the FURI website.
